How to handle surface defects of carbon fiber products?

The appearance of carbon fiber is usually smooth, and few people are likely to see rough parts. After molding, carbon fiber may have white spots, bubbles, pores, pits and other defects on the surface, which need to undergo a series of treatment before delivery.

What are the causes of surface defects of carbon fiber products?

Carbon fiber products are mainly customized processing, involving a wide variety of molds, most of which use molding processes. During the processing phase, defects such as white spots, air bubbles, porosity and pits may appear.

Here's why:

1. Vacuum leakage: the vacuum bag is broken, the sealing tape is not in place, the mold is poorly sealed, etc.;

2. Incomplete penetration: the resin gel time is too short, the viscosity is too high, the carbon fiber precursor is too coarse, the resin content is too small, the resin spillage is too much, etc., resulting in insufficient carbon penetration of the fiber;

3. Operation error: during processing, heating is too fast, pressure is too fast, pressure is too early, holding time is too short, temperature is too high, and operation problems lead to insufficient molding of carbon fiber products.

Do surface defects affect the use of carbon fiber products?

Too many surface defects of carbon fiber products are not necessarily proportional to the quality, but carbon fiber products are usually used in the manufacturing industry, with high requirements for performance and appearance, and too many defects will affect normal delivery. In addition, many defects, pores, and cracks will affect the performance of carbon fiber products. Carbon fiber porosity has a technical term used to summarize the penetration effect of carbon fiber products. If the porosity is too high, the resin content is excessive or unevenly distributed. In actual production, operations must be standardized to avoid this.

How to deal with surface defects of carbon fiber products?

Surface defects in carbon fiber products are a common phenomenon. Most of them can be processed and repaired. As long as the production process is normal, the yield of a good product will not be too low.

For defective carbon fiber products, they can be polished, cleaned and sprayed without compromising performance to eliminate defects and maintain a clean appearance. The process includes water grinding, priming, middle coating, top coating, grinding and polishing, and repeated spraying and polishing to ensure that the appearance of carbon fiber meets the delivery standard.
